A soft bound book is defined as text bound into a soft flexible cover, other names are soft cover; soft back; dime novels and airport novels. Soft cover books are lighter than hard cover books, making them easier to transport and more economical to produce. Thomson-Shore manufactures durable soft bound books.
With a soft bound book, you still have options. Thomson-Shore is known for producing beautiful covers with vivid color and crisp text. Cover options include informational inside covers and flaps (like a dustjacket) perfect for the author’s biography.

Book Binding
- Perfect Bind – text book block is glued to cover spine
- Notch Bind – text book block is scored and then is glued to cover spine
- Sew and Glue Bind – adds durability: text book block is sewn and then glued to the cover spine
- Gatefold or French Flap – cover is extended/folded on front and back to give look and feel of a jacket
- Saddlestitch: maximum of 64 pages; text is folded and stapled at the spine fold (booklet binding)

Cover Finishings
- Gloss Lamination – pops color
- Matte Lamination – softens image with a velvet feel

- Gritty Matte – applied coating that feels like light sand paper and reflects light (finger print resistant)
- Embossing – sculpted, hard edge or round – raises, therefore highlights images or words
